Two people, a set of straps, and whatever jobs fitted around a university timetable.
Moving Fellows began in the streets around the University of Oregon, doing labor-only work — you rented the truck, we did the carrying. There was no truck of our own for a while, and no office at all. What there was, from fairly early on, was a reputation for turning up when we said we would and not putting a corner through anybody’s wall.
That is a modest thing to build a company on. It also turns out to be the whole business. Most people who have had a bad move can tell you exactly what went wrong, and it is almost never that somebody was not strong enough.
What changed
Labor-only work teaches you the parts of a move that go wrong, because you are standing in the middle of them without controlling any of it — the truck that was too small, the packing that was done the night before in a hurry, the parking nobody checked. Over time we started doing those parts too.
A truck. Then proper materials and a crew who packed the boxes they would later carry. Then storage, for the gap between closing dates that catches almost everybody. Then a second market when the work in Portland outgrew visiting it.
Today Moving Fellows is a full-service moving company working out of two Oregon offices, and the labor-only service we started with is still on the price list — it is just one of eight things we do rather than the only one.
The things we are strict about
Every moving company says it is careful. These are the specific commitments that phrase is standing in for.
We look before we quote
Estimates come from a walkthrough — in person for a house, over video for smaller moves. A telephone estimate on a four-bedroom household is a guess, and the gap between the guess and the reality is where most disputes in this industry come from.
Wrapping happens in the room
Furniture is blanket-wrapped before it leaves the room it is in, not at the truck. Floors and door frames are covered along the whole route. This is slower at the start of the day and faster by the end of it.
Boxes are labelled for where they are going
Not for where they came from. It is a small discipline that decides whether your unpack takes an evening or a fortnight.
We say no when the answer is no
Hazardous materials do not travel. Some specialty items need a rigger rather than a moving crew. Some peak dates are genuinely full. We would rather tell you that at the quote than discover it with your piano halfway through a doorway.
